Until the Berlin Wall was torn down in 1989, the German Democratic Republic (GDR / DDR) had a huge intelligence and security service: The Stasi, that suited only the governing, communistic party, the SED. The Stasi, was part of the Ministerium fur Staatssicherheid or MfS. This service collected huge amounts of private information on nearly all people, living in East-Germany, with the only purpose to control society.
Most parts of these analog archives still remain stored in Berlin, where they are made available for citizens and other victims of repression. Where necessary documents are being restored.
